Written instruction is not a substitute for qualified, in-person training and mentorship. Rope systems, avalanche rescue, swiftwater rescue and wilderness medicine all require hands-on practice under supervision before they are worth anything in the field. An article can tell you what a technique is for and where it fails; it cannot tell you whether you are performing it correctly.

Conditions change. Guidebook information ages. Equipment has service lives and recall notices. You are responsible for your own assessment of terrain, weather, water level, snowpack, tide and your party's actual ability on the day. If in doubt, go home — the route will still be there.
