A Life Jacket Only Works If It Fits

Buoyancy ratings describe how much flotation a vest provides, but a personal flotation device that rides up in moving water is not doing that job.

Personal flotation devices are the most regulated item in paddlesports and among the most poorly fitted. The ratings on the label describe a device; fit and type decide whether it functions.

Types describe intended use, not quality

United States Coast Guard approval categorizes flotation devices by intended use and performance, distinguishing offshore, near-shore, flotation aid and special-use designs.

The vests common in whitewater are flotation aids designed for conscious users in situations where help is close, and they are not designed to turn an unconscious person face-up.

Choosing by category first, then by fit, avoids the common error of buying an appealing vest designed for a different environment entirely.

Fit is tested by pulling upward

A correctly fitted vest cannot be pulled up past the ears when someone lifts it by the shoulders. If it rides up on land, it will ride up in the water.

Moving water pushes upward on a swimmer with considerable force, so a vest that shifts becomes a collar rather than flotation across the torso.

Fitting is done in sequence from the waist upward, tightening the lowest straps first so the body of the vest sits where the flotation is needed.

Rescue vests are a different tool

Vests with a quick-release harness are designed for trained rescuers to attach themselves to a rope, and they introduce a hazard for anyone who has not trained on them.

The release mechanism must be operable under load with one hand, in cold water, by feel, which is a trained skill rather than a feature.

Swiftwater rescue courses cover these directly, and the standing advice is that the harness stays unused until the training exists.

Foam ages and loses flotation

Closed-cell foam compresses over years of use and loses buoyancy gradually, and repeated compression from sitting or from tight packing accelerates it.

A simple float test in calm water gives a rough sense of whether a vest still holds a person at the expected level.

Sunlight also degrades the shell fabric, which is why a vest left on a dock through a season ages faster than one used regularly and stored inside.

The regulation and the practice differ

State boating law dictates when a device must be carried or worn, and the rules vary by state, by craft and sometimes by age of the occupant.

Regulation sets a minimum. Whitewater practice is that the vest is worn from put-in to takeout regardless of what the statute requires.

Where a jurisdiction's rule is unclear, the state boating agency publishes the current requirement, and it is worth checking rather than assuming interstate consistency.
