Alpine starts: why competent people leave at two in the morning
The early start is not machismo. It is the recognition that mountains are dramatically safer in the hours before the sun does its work.

Turning up at a hut and being told breakfast is at one in the morning strikes most people as excessive the first time. It is not tradition and it is not toughness. It is a direct response to what heat does to a mountain.
The sun is the hazard
Nearly every objective danger in alpine terrain gets worse as the day warms.
Rockfall. Much of the rock on a high face is held in place by ice. When the sun hits it, that ice melts and the rock comes down. Couloirs and gullies that are quiet and frozen at four in the morning become active shooting galleries by ten.
Snow bridges. Crossing a glacier on frozen bridges at dawn is a different proposition from crossing the same glacier in the afternoon when the bridges have softened. The bridge that held four people on the way up may not hold the first person on the way down.
Wet snow avalanches. Spring and summer snow slopes are stable when frozen and progressively less so as the surface melts through the day. A slope that was firm neve at six can be sliding slush by noon.
Crevasse falls. Same mechanism — softening snow, weakening lids, and a party that is now tired.
Afternoon storms. In many ranges convective build-up produces thunderstorms with striking regularity in the early afternoon. Being on a ridge or a summit when that happens is one of the more serious situations in mountaineering.
The freeze is the resource
What makes early travel safe is the overnight refreeze. Snow consolidates, rock is locked in place, bridges harden. That window opens when temperatures drop and closes when the sun reaches the face.
The critical question is therefore not "what time is sunrise" but "what time does the sun hit the terrain I will be on, and where will I be then". A south-facing couloir gets sun far earlier than a north face. A climb that finishes on a shaded aspect buys you hours.
And in a warm spell with a poor overnight freeze, the window may not open at all — which is a legitimate reason to not go, and one that experienced parties take seriously.
Building the plan backwards
Work out when you need to be off the hazardous ground. Then subtract the time it takes to get there, plus a realistic margin, plus the approach. That gives you a departure time, and it is frequently earlier than anyone wants.
The common error is planning forward from a departure time that feels reasonable, then discovering that reasonable puts you under a couloir at eleven.
Add margin for being slower than planned, because parties are almost always slower than planned. A guidebook time assumes competent movement and no problems.
Making an early start actually work
Pack completely the night before. Everything, including what you will wear, laid out. Fumbling in the dark at one in the morning wastes time and wakes everyone.
Sleep earlier than feels natural. Sleep quality before an alpine start is poor for everyone. Lying down early gets you more of it.
Eat something, even if you do not feel like it, which you will not. Appetite is suppressed at that hour and at altitude, and a party that has not eaten will be slow by seven in the morning.
Have the first hour planned in detail — the approach in the dark is where route-finding errors happen, and an hour lost at the start is an hour of exposure at the end. Reconnoitre the start the previous evening if you can.
Dress to move cold. It will be very cold at the start and you will warm up. Overdressing at three in the morning means sweating by five.
The descent is the point
People frame the early start around reaching the summit. The actual reason is getting down before conditions deteriorate. Most alpine accidents happen on descent, on tired legs, in worsening conditions, in the afternoon.
A summit reached at midday with a three-hour descent through softening snow is a worse outcome than a summit reached at eight. Plan the turnaround around the descent conditions, not the ascent.
The trade-off, acknowledged
Moving in the dark is slower and route-finding is harder. Fatigue from a short night is real and it degrades judgement. Cold hands and cold feet in the small hours are genuinely miserable.
Those costs are accepted because the alternative — being under a couloir in the sun, or on a glacier at three in the afternoon — is not a cost but a hazard. The two are not comparable, and that asymmetry is the entire argument.
