The avalanche transceiver: buying one, and the practice nobody does
The device is not the hard part. Modern transceivers are excellent. The variable that decides outcomes is how many times the person holding it has done a real search.

Any current three-antenna digital transceiver from a reputable manufacturer will do the job. The differences between models are real but modest, and they are dwarfed by the difference between a practised user and an unpractised one.
That is the honest headline. Everything below assumes it.
What to actually look for
Three antennas. Non-negotiable. Two-antenna devices have a much worse fine search and can produce spurious signals near the victim. Anything that old should be retired.
Marking or flagging for multiple burials — the ability to mark a found victim so the device moves on to the next signal. Multiple burial handling is where models differ most, and while multiple burials are uncommon, they are also the situations with the least margin.
A clear display and simple controls. You will use this cold, gloved, terrified and with adrenaline destroying your fine motor control. Fewer buttons is better. A device you can switch to search mode without looking is better still.
Good battery life and a clear battery indicator. Alkaline batteries, not rechargeables — rechargeable cells show full voltage and then drop off a cliff, and their behaviour in cold is poor. Replace at around half remaining rather than running them down.
Reasonable search width, which shortens the signal search phase across a wide debris field.
Wearing it correctly
In the supplied harness, under an outer layer, against your body. Not in a pack, ever — packs get torn off in avalanches. Not in a jacket pocket unless the manufacturer specifically permits a zipped, secured pocket, and even then the harness is better.
Turn it on at the vehicle, check it, and leave it on. The single most common transceiver failure in real incidents is a device that was switched off or left in search mode.
Interference is real and getting worse
Phones, cameras, radios, heated gloves, electronic bindings, magnetic clasps and metal all degrade transceiver performance. This affects both transmitting and searching, and modern life has put considerably more electronics on people than the standards anticipated.
Keep electronics well away from the transceiver while transmitting — the usual guidance is a hand's span or more — and considerably further while searching, because interference during a search is the more dangerous case. During a rescue, put your phone in aeroplane mode or hand it to someone standing well back.
The group check, every single time
Thirty seconds at the trailhead. One person switches to search, everyone else walks past transmitting at a few metres, and the checker confirms each signal. Then the checker switches back to transmit and someone else confirms them.
This catches dead batteries, devices left in search mode, and the person who forgot theirs entirely. All three happen, regularly, to experienced groups.
The practice, which is the actual subject
Here is the uncomfortable statistic from every training provider: most recreational users have never done a full search from signal acquisition to probe strike under time pressure. They did it once, on a course, years ago.
Under stress, an unpractised searcher does predictable things. They wave the device around instead of moving it slowly. They run past the low point. They pull the probe out after a strike to check. They dig straight down at the probe and exhaust themselves in a hole.
Practice fixes all of it, and practice is easy.
Start of every season, bury a pack with a transceiver in it in a safe flat area and search for it. Time yourself. Do it three times.
Practise the whole chain — signal search, coarse search, fine search, probe, and actually dig. Digging is the longest phase and it is the phase people never rehearse. Digging a realistic burial out of set snow is a shock the first time.
Practise with gloves on, wearing what you ski in. Assembling a probe with cold hands and thick gloves is meaningfully harder than doing it bare-handed in a car park.
Practise as a group, so you find out how you communicate under pressure and who takes charge. Group coordination — who searches, who probes, who digs, who calls for help — is a large part of the time saved.
Many resorts and clubs maintain beacon training parks with buried transmitters. They are free, they take twenty minutes, and there is no excuse.
The thing worth repeating
A transceiver does not protect you. It only improves the chance that your friends find your body in time for it to still be a rescue. The protection comes entirely from terrain choice and from not being caught.
People who are fluent with the equipment tend, in my experience, to be more conservative rather than less — because practising the rescue makes the difficulty of it extremely concrete.
