Boots: fit beats brand, every time
The most expensive boot in the shop is worthless if it does not match the shape of your foot, and the shape of your foot is not something a review can tell you about.

People research boots for weeks. They read comparisons, watch reviews, obsess over sole stiffness and midsole materials and waterproof membranes. Then they buy the winner online, and it does not fit, and the trip is ruined by blisters and bruised toenails.
Boot reviews are useful for narrowing a list. They cannot tell you anything about the only variable that matters, which is whether that particular last matches your particular foot.
Last shape is the whole game
A last is the form a boot is built around. Manufacturers use different ones — some run narrow, some accommodate a wide forefoot, some have a high volume through the instep, some are cut low. These differences are large and they are consistent within a brand.
What this means practically: your job is to find the brands whose shape matches your foot, and then choose among their models. Not the reverse. A person with a wide forefoot will be uncomfortable in a narrow last regardless of how good the boot is, and no amount of lacing technique fixes it.
Once you find a brand that fits you, stay with it. Repeat buyers of the same last are the people who never talk about blisters.
How to actually try boots on
Late in the day, when your feet have swollen. Feet are measurably larger in the afternoon and larger again after several hours of walking, and a boot fitted on a cold morning foot will be tight by evening on day two.
With the socks you will actually wear. Sock thickness changes fit substantially.
Both feet. Most people have a size difference between left and right, sometimes a significant one. Fit the larger foot and adjust the other with a thicker sock or an insole.
Then walk. Not two steps on carpet — use the ramp in the shop, spend fifteen minutes, go up and down repeatedly. A boot that feels fine standing still can reveal heel lift or toe contact only under load on a slope.
What good fit feels like
Heel locked. Almost no lift when you walk uphill with the laces tight. Heel movement is the mechanism that produces the classic heel blister, and it cannot be trained out.
Toes free. When you kick your toe firmly into the front of the boot with the laces loose, you should have a finger's width of space behind your heel. When laced and walking downhill, your toes should not touch the front. Bruised or lost toenails after a big descent almost always mean a boot that was half a size too short.
Midfoot held, not squeezed. Snug, without pressure points. Any spot that feels hot or pinched in the shop will be an injury by the second day.
Width right at the ball. The widest part of your foot should sit at the widest part of the boot.
Stiffness should match the job
A stiff sole is essential for edging on steep snow and for holding a crampon. It is unpleasant and tiring on a long trail walk.
Match the boot to what you do most, not to the hardest thing you might do once. Mountaineering boots exist in graded stiffness categories, and those categories correspond directly to crampon compatibility — flexible boots take only strap-on crampons, boots with a heel welt take semi-automatic bindings, and full welts take fully automatic ones. Buying a boot and crampon separately without checking this compatibility is a common and expensive mistake.
Insoles are the cheapest upgrade
Factory insoles are usually a thin piece of foam that exists to fill a box. A supportive aftermarket insole, or a custom-moulded one, changes how your foot sits in the boot and frequently fixes fit problems that seemed structural.
For anyone with high arches, flat feet, or a history of hot spots in the same place, this is the first thing to try before concluding a boot does not work.
Break-in, and its limits
Modern boots need much less breaking in than leather ones did, but they still need some — wear them for short walks, then longer ones, before committing to a multi-day trip. Leather in particular moulds and softens considerably.
What break-in cannot do is make a boot longer, wider at the ball, or a different shape. Pain that comes from the boot being the wrong size does not go away. If it hurts in the shop, it will hurt on the hill.
Then look after them
Dry them slowly at room temperature, never against a radiator or a fire — heat cracks leather and delaminates adhesives. Remove insoles to dry separately. Clean off mud, which draws moisture out of leather. Re-treat when water stops beading.
A well-kept pair of boots that fits is worth more than any two pairs that do not.
