Bolts By The Sea And The Corrosion You Cannot See
Coastal climbing hardware can fail from stress corrosion cracking that leaves the visible surface intact, which is why sea cliff bolts are judged by age and material rather than appearance.

Most climbers assess a bolt by looking at it. On sea cliffs and in humid tropical climates that check is close to worthless, because the damaging process happens inside the metal.
Two different kinds of corrosion
Ordinary rusting is visible. Metal reacts with oxygen and moisture, the surface roughens and stains, and the loss of material is obvious to anyone who looks.
The dangerous coastal mechanism is different. Under sustained tension in a chloride-rich environment, cracks propagate through the metal while the outer surface can stay bright and apparently sound.
A bolt in that condition may look new and hold almost no load. Failures have occurred under body weight, on hardware that passed a visual inspection minutes earlier.
Why salt air is the aggravating factor
Chloride from sea spray attacks the passive oxide film that protects stainless steel. Once that film is breached at a small point, corrosion concentrates there rather than spreading evenly.
Heat and humidity accelerate it, which is why tropical sea cliffs have the worst reputation. The rock itself can contribute too, if it holds moisture or contains reactive minerals.
Spray does not have to reach the cliff directly. Salt carried on wind and deposited over years builds concentrations well above the shoreline and inside sheltered caves.
Why material choice decides the outcome
Plated steel hardware is intended for dry inland rock and corrodes quickly in marine air. Standard stainless is better but remains vulnerable to the cracking mechanism in hot, salty conditions.
Titanium hardware is the answer developed for the worst environments, because it resists chloride attack in a way steel alloys do not. Its cost is why rebolting programmes take years.
Climbers cannot usually tell alloys apart by eye. What can be established is the age of a route, the rebolting history of the crag, and who maintains the hardware.
Who actually maintains fixed gear
Fixed anchors are not municipal infrastructure. They are placed by individuals and maintained, if at all, by volunteer groups and local clubs funded by donation.
Coverage varies enormously. Some regions have organised rebolting programmes with published records, and others have hardware left by people who stopped climbing decades ago.
Local climbing organisations and current guidebook information are the sources that carry warnings about specific crags. Treating them as required reading before a coastal trip is the practical response.
What this changes about judgement
The reasonable conclusion is not that sea cliffs are unclimbable, but that a bolt in a marine environment cannot be assessed the way an inland bolt is.
Parties on such cliffs commonly back up anchors with their own gear where the rock allows, and treat any single fixed point as unverified rather than as protection.
Anyone new to coastal climbing needs the local picture from qualified instructors and the regional access body before committing to routes where retreat depends on fixed hardware.
