Glide Cracks And Why Nobody Can Time Them
Glide avalanches occur when the whole snowpack slides on wet ground, and they release without a trigger on no predictable schedule, so the only management is avoidance.

Most avalanche hazards respond to something a person does. Glide avalanches do not, which makes them an unusual problem that standard assessment tools cannot address.
The whole pack moves on the ground
A glide avalanche involves the entire snowpack sliding slowly downhill over the ground surface itself, rather than one layer failing over another within the snow.
It requires liquid water at the interface between snow and ground, which lubricates the contact and reduces the friction holding the pack in place.
That water can come from meltwater percolating down, from rain, or from heat conducted out of the ground beneath an insulating snowpack in early winter.
Smooth ground is the requirement
Glide needs a surface the pack can move over. Smooth rock slabs, matted long grass and steep smooth soil all provide it.
Rough terrain with boulders, shrubs and small trees anchors the pack mechanically, which is why glide activity recurs in the same specific paths year after year.
Local knowledge of where those paths are is genuinely valuable, because the terrain feature that causes them does not change between seasons.
The crack is not a countdown
As the pack creeps, it opens a crack, often exposing bare ground. That crack is visible evidence that glide is occurring on the slope.
What it does not indicate is when the slope will release. Cracks have opened and then persisted for weeks without failing, and others have released within hours.
Some open and never avalanche at all, with the pack simply melting away. There is no established relationship between crack width and imminence.
Human triggering is not the mechanism
Glide releases occur without anybody present, day and night, in cold weather and warm. They are driven by water at the base rather than by loading from above.
This means the usual toolkit does not apply. Snowpack tests examine layers within the pack, and the failure here is at the ground.
Because the timing is unpredictable, the only reliable management is not being underneath a glide crack, including on the approach and the descent.
How they are reported
Forecast centres list glide as a distinct problem when it is active, describing the aspects and elevations where cracks have been observed.
The associated advice is consistently about avoidance and about minimising time spent below the feature, rather than about any assessment technique.
Anyone travelling in terrain where glide is reported should treat the regional bulletin and local guiding knowledge as the operative information, since the hazard is location-specific in a way general principles cannot capture.
