Gloves Are The Item Most People Get Wrong
Hand insulation fails for reasons that have little to do with warmth rating, and the standard fix of buying thicker gloves usually makes the underlying problem worse.

Cold hands end more winter days than cold feet do, and the common response is buying a warmer glove. The failure is usually circulation, moisture or fit, none of which thickness addresses.
Hands do not generate their own heat
Fingers have very little muscle mass. They are warmed almost entirely by blood arriving from the core, which is why cold hands are frequently a core temperature problem.
When the body prioritizes central warmth it constricts peripheral circulation, pulling blood away from the extremities. The hands go cold because the system decided they could.
The practical consequence is that adding a layer to the torso or eating something often warms the hands faster than changing gloves does.
Tight gloves are cold gloves
A glove that compresses the hand restricts both circulation and the loft that provides insulation. A thicker glove in the same size makes both problems worse.
Room at the fingertips is where warmth lives, because the trapped air is doing the insulating, not the material itself.
Mittens outperform gloves at the same thickness for this reason: fingers share a single air space and warm each other rather than each being isolated.
Sweat is the main way gloves fail
Hands sweat heavily during hard uphill effort. A glove saturated from the inside insulates poorly and then freezes when the pace drops at a summit or a belay.
Experienced winter travelers manage this by using a thin liner while working and swapping to dry insulation when they stop, rather than wearing one glove all day.
Carrying spares is the standard answer, and keeping them somewhere they stay dry and above freezing is what makes them useful when swapped in.
Dexterity and warmth trade against each other
Handling a rope, a beacon, a stove or a camera demands finger movement, and the warmest handwear makes all of it difficult.
Most people carry a system rather than one item: a thin liner for tasks, an insulated glove for travel and a heavy overmitt for emergencies and stationary time.
The overmitt rarely gets used, which is exactly why it is still in the pack. It exists for the day something goes wrong.
Cold injury is a medical matter
Fingers that have gone numb, waxy or white are showing signs of cold injury, and rewarming decisions in the field can affect the outcome significantly.
Freeze-thaw-refreeze cycles are recognized as particularly damaging, which is why the topic is covered seriously in wilderness medical training rather than in gear discussions.
Anyone with a suspected cold injury needs medical assessment. The gear conversation is about preventing that situation from arising at all.
