How Grades Get Agreed And Why They Drift
Climbing grades are consensus values set by repeat ascents rather than measurements, which is why they shift over time and differ between regions and rock types.

A climbing grade looks like a measurement but behaves like an opinion poll. It is produced by a slow social process, and understanding that process explains most arguments about it.
The first ascensionist only proposes
Whoever climbs a route first suggests a grade, usually by comparison with routes they have already done. That suggestion is a starting point rather than a verdict.
Subsequent climbers repeat the route and offer their own view. Over enough ascents a rough consensus settles, and guidebooks and online databases record where it landed.
Routes with few repeats therefore carry unreliable grades. A hard line in a remote area may sit for years on a number nobody has ever tested independently.
Why bodies change the answer
Grades describe difficulty for an unspecified average climber, and no such person exists. Reach, finger size and flexibility change how hard a specific sequence feels.
A move that requires locking off between distant holds is far harder for a shorter climber, who may need an entirely different and more strenuous sequence.
Because consensus is built from whoever repeats the route, local body types and local styles bias the result. This is one source of the reputation certain crags have for stiffness.
Style is baked into the number
Different systems measure different things. Some describe the hardest single move, others the overall effort of a long pitch, and others fold in danger or difficulty of protection.
A well-protected sport route and a poorly protected trad line can share a technical grade while presenting completely different consequences for failure.
This is why serious guidebooks carry separate danger or commitment ratings alongside the technical number. Reading only the number discards the part that describes what a fall would mean.
Drift over decades
Grades move. Holds break, making a route harder. Others become polished from traffic, which changes friction and effectively raises the difficulty on slabby terrain.
In the other direction, knowledge accumulates. Once a better sequence is found and published, the route becomes easier for everyone who follows, though the number often lags behind.
Training standards also change. Moves that once seemed exceptional become common, and the historical grades of old testpieces gradually get revised in guidebooks.
Using grades without trusting them
The practical approach is to treat a grade as a rough filter, not a promise. It suggests whether a route is worth considering, then the route itself tells you the rest.
Between areas and countries, comparison degrades further. Climbers travelling somewhere new usually drop well below their normal level for a few days to recalibrate.
What a grade never conveys is condition. Wet rock, cold fingers, a rope-eating crack or an approach that took four hours all matter more on the day than the number does.
