Motorized Access Changed The Exposure Math
Snowmobiles put riders on large avalanche slopes quickly and repeatedly, which alters both the terrain reached in a day and the way a party is spread out on it.

Motorized winter recreation reaches terrain that would take a touring party most of a day to gain, and it reaches it many times over. That changes exposure in ways worth stating plainly.
Speed multiplies the number of slopes crossed
A ski touring party may cross two or three avalanche paths in a day. A motorized party can cross many, and can return to the same slope repeatedly.
Each crossing is an opportunity to encounter an unstable pocket, so the same daily probability applies far more times.
Avalanche fatality records in the United States show motorized users as a substantial share of the total, which follows from the amount of terrain covered.
Machines apply a large, concentrated load
A loaded machine is far heavier than a skier and delivers that weight rapidly to a small area, particularly when climbing hard on a steep slope.
That makes it an effective trigger, including on slopes where a skier might have passed without initiating anything.
Highmarking, climbing as far up a slope as possible before turning, places that load high on the path where a release affects everything below.
Group spacing works differently
Touring parties expose one person at a time by convention. Motorized groups often stage riders at the base of a slope where several sit in the runout.
A slide then involves the rider on the slope and the group waiting below, which is a documented pattern in accident reports.
Staging in a genuinely safe location out of the runout, rather than at a convenient one, is the standard corrective and it is taught explicitly.
Rescue has different constraints
Machines carry more equipment than a pack can, so motorized groups can carry better shovels, probes and even inflatable devices without a weight penalty.
They can also cover distance quickly to summon help, which is a real advantage when a party has communication access at a road.
Against that, a buried machine complicates a search, engine noise masks communication, and riders spread across a basin may not see an event happen.
Training exists specifically for motorized users
Avalanche courses designed for snowmobilers are offered by many providers, taught on machines and addressing terrain use patterns that ski-oriented courses do not.
They cover the same forecast reading and rescue fundamentals, applied to riding terrain and to group management on a machine.
Taking the motorized version rather than the general one is the practical recommendation, because the decisions differ even where the snow science is identical.
