Open water swimming: the hazards that are not the distance
Pool fitness transfers poorly to open water. Cold, current, visibility and boats account for far more incidents than a lack of endurance.

Someone who swims two kilometres comfortably in a pool can get into serious difficulty in four hundred metres of open water. That is not a fitness gap. It is a set of environmental factors that the pool removes entirely.
Cold, which is the main one
Even in summer, open water is usually far colder than a pool. Entry triggers the cold shock response — an involuntary gasp and a minute or more of hyperventilation you cannot control. In water, with waves, that is how people inhale water in the first thirty seconds.
Then cold incapacitation: within minutes, hands and arms lose strength and coordination, and swimming becomes progressively less effective. This happens long before core temperature drops meaningfully, and it is the reason people fail to reach a shore they could see clearly.
Mitigations: enter gradually, wet your face and neck first, wait for the breathing to settle before setting off, wear a wetsuit in cold water, and build tolerance through regular exposure across a season rather than a single swim.
Current and tide
A current that is imperceptible while standing can exceed your swimming speed. The classic incident: an easy swim out with the flow, then an impossible swim back against it.
Always know which way the water is moving and plan to swim against it first, when you are fresh, and return with it. In tidal water, swim near slack water and know the direction of the flood and ebb.
In rivers and estuaries, never swim across a current expecting to hold a straight line. Aim upstream of your target and accept being carried.
Visibility, in both directions
You cannot see far in open water, and — more importantly — nobody can see you. A swimmer's head is a very small object among waves, and boat operators genuinely do not see swimmers.
Wear a bright cap. Tow a brightly coloured float, which is the single most effective safety item for open water swimming: highly visible, provides something to hold if you need to rest, and costs little.
Stay out of boat channels and marked navigation routes entirely. A collision with a propeller is not survivable in the way most swimming hazards are.
Navigation
Without lane lines you will swim in a curve, usually toward your dominant side, and you will not notice. Sighting — lifting the eyes briefly every handful of strokes to check a fixed landmark — is a specific skill worth practising.
Pick a large, high, unmistakable landmark rather than a buoy at water level. From wave height you cannot see anything low.
Waves and swell
Breathing rhythm learned in flat water fails when a wave arrives at the moment you turn to breathe. Learn to breathe on both sides, so you can breathe away from the chop.
Swell is not itself dangerous to a competent swimmer in open water, but it makes sighting hard and it hides you from view. Near rocks or a shore it is entirely different — the danger is being put onto something solid.
Entry and exit
Most open water incidents happen close to shore. Rocks, slippery weed, surge, and the difficulty of getting out of the water when cold and tired with waves pushing you around.
Identify the exit before you start, and identify an alternative. Getting out is harder than getting in, always, and a swimmer with cold arms cannot climb a ladder or scramble a rock shelf.
Never alone
This is the rule that matters most and it is the one people break because open water swimming feels solitary and meditative.
Swim with someone, or swim where a lifeguard or observer is present, or at minimum have someone on shore who knows exactly where you are and when you will be back. A swimmer in difficulty in open water without an observer usually has no realistic chance of rescue.
Do not rely on a phone in a dry pouch as a rescue plan. In practice, cold hands and water do not make for successful phone calls.
Health considerations
Cold water immersion produces a sharp cardiovascular response. Anyone with a known heart condition should take medical advice before cold water swimming, and everyone should build exposure gradually rather than jumping into cold water after a long layoff.
Water quality matters too, particularly in rivers and urban waterways after heavy rain when run-off carries contamination. Avoid swallowing water, cover open wounds, and shower afterwards.
The progression
Start short, in known, sheltered water, with a float and a companion, in conditions well below your limit. Build distance slowly, and build cold tolerance across a whole season rather than in a fortnight.
The people who swim comfortably in cold, rough open water did it that way. There is no shortcut, and the attempts at one produce most of the incidents.
