Reading water: eddies, holes, waves and what the surface is telling you

A river surface is a readable map of what is happening underneath. Learning to read it is the difference between reacting to a rapid and moving through it deliberately.

To a beginner a rapid is chaos. To an experienced paddler it is a set of recognisable features, each of which behaves predictably. That transition — from noise to pattern — is the core skill in whitewater, and it comes from deliberate looking rather than from mileage alone.

The current is not uniform

Start with the basics. Water moves fastest in the middle of the channel and at the surface, and slowest along the banks and the bed, where friction acts. On a bend, the fastest water is on the outside, which is also where the channel is deepest and most likely to be undercut. The inside of a bend is slower and shallower, and it is where gravel bars form.

That single fact explains most of what you see.

Eddies

Behind any obstruction — a boulder, a bend, a projection from the bank — water fills the space by circling back upstream. That pocket of upstream-moving or still water is an eddy, and it is the paddler's most important feature.

Eddies are where you stop, rest, regroup, scout and set safety. A rapid is not a continuous descent; it is a sequence of moves between eddies.

The eddy line is the boundary between the downstream current and the upstream eddy, and it is where the two flows shear against each other. That shear is what flips beginners: the boat is being pushed two ways at once.

Crossing an eddy line requires speed, angle and edge. Enter with momentum, angled across the line, edging into the turn. Half-hearted entries get spun.

Waves

Standing waves form where fast water slows or where flows collide. They stay in place while water passes through them, which is what distinguishes them from ocean waves.

Most waves are friendly — they give a bouncy ride and they are the sign of a deep, clean channel. A line of standing waves, a wave train, generally marks the deepest and safest route through a rapid.

Big waves can flip a boat if hit at an angle, and a very steep breaking wave has a recirculating face that behaves more like a hole.

Holes

Where water pours over a drop or a submerged rock, it plunges down and the surface water immediately downstream flows back upstream to fill the gap. That recirculation is a hole, and it is the feature that holds boats and swimmers.

Reading them:

A smiling hole — the ends further downstream than the middle — tends to push you out toward the sides. Generally more forgiving.

A frowning hole — the ends further upstream — tends to feed you back toward the middle. Considerably more retentive.

Green tongue through the middle means water is flushing through rather than recirculating, and that is usually the route.

A uniform hole across the whole channel, particularly below a man-made weir or low-head dam, is the most dangerous feature on any river. There is no end to escape to, the recirculation is even, and the debris and the swimmer both stay. These have killed a great many people and they should be portaged, always.

Pillows, cushions and what is underneath

Water piling up against the upstream face of a rock forms a pillow — a mound of water that deflects you around the obstacle. A good pillow means the rock is reasonably vertical and the water is going around it.

The absence of a pillow where you would expect one is a serious warning: it suggests water is going under the rock, which means it is undercut. Undercuts are among the most lethal river features because they trap a swimmer beneath the surface.

Similarly, a smooth glassy tongue disappearing under a boulder with no turbulence coming out the other side is a sieve or an undercut. Stay away.

The V

A downstream V — a V pointing downstream, formed by two converging lines of disturbed water — marks a clear channel between obstacles. That is generally where you want to go.

An upstream V — water piling up in a V pointing upstream — marks an obstruction just below the surface. Avoid.

This is the simplest and most useful pattern in river reading and it holds nearly everywhere.

Horizon lines

A line across the river beyond which you cannot see the water surface means a drop of unknown size. It might be a small ledge; it might be a waterfall or a weir.

The rule is absolute: never paddle over a horizon line you have not seen the other side of. Eddy out, get out, and look.

Learning to see it

Sit beside a rapid for half an hour and just watch. Throw sticks in and follow them — where they go is where you would go, and it is remarkably instructive.

Then paddle easy water deliberately: catch every eddy, ferry across every current, surf every small wave. The skill is built by doing the moves on water where being wrong costs nothing.
