Falling well: the skill nobody teaches until after the injury
Lead falls are a normal part of climbing and most people learn to take them badly, by accident, over years. There is a technique, and it can be learned deliberately in an afternoon.

Climbers spend enormous effort on not falling and almost none on falling. Then they fall — everybody does — and the outcome is determined by reflexes that were never trained.
Falling well is a motor skill. It responds to practice like any other, and the practice is genuinely quick.
Look down before you commit
Before every hard move, know what is underneath you. Where is your last clip? Is there a ledge, a corner, a slab you would slide down? Is the rope behind your leg?
That last one causes more ankle and back injuries than almost anything else in sport climbing. If the rope runs behind your leg and you fall, it flips you upside down. Check it every time you step past a clip, especially on traverses and anywhere the route wanders.
Let go properly
The instinct at the moment of failure is to grab — the rope, the quickdraw, the last hold, anything. Grabbing the rope is how people get rope burn on their palms and lose skin from their fingers. Grabbing a draw as you go past can trap a finger.
Hands away from the rope. Push off slightly if you are on a slab or anything less than vertical, so you clear the rock rather than scraping down it. On steep ground you do not need to push at all; you will swing clear naturally.
The body position
Feet down, slightly apart, knees soft and bent. Hands up in front of you at about chest height, palms toward the wall, ready to absorb contact — but not reaching, not stiff-armed. A locked arm meeting rock is how wrists break.
Eyes on the wall. Watching where you are going is what lets you place your feet on impact instead of hitting sideways.
Stay relaxed. Tension transmits force. A rigid body takes the swing into the joints; a loose body absorbs it.
The belayer is half the fall
A soft catch means the belayer allows some upward movement — a small hop, a step in toward the wall, letting the system take up energy over a longer distance. This dramatically reduces the force on the climber and, on overhanging rock, reduces the swing into the wall.
A hard catch — belayer anchored, braced, immovable — stops the climber abruptly. On steep ground that means slamming into the rock. It is occasionally correct: near the ground, above a ledge, or where the climber must be stopped short at all costs. Otherwise it is worse.
Weight difference complicates this. A much lighter belayer will get lifted whether they want to be or not, and a much heavier one has to work at giving slack. Talk about it before you leave the ground. A ground anchor is appropriate when the difference is large or when the first bolt is high.
Practise in a graded way
On overhanging terrain, well above the ground, with a belayer who knows what you are doing.
Start with a fall from just above the clip — barely a fall at all. Then level with the clip. Then a metre above. Then two. Increase only when the previous distance feels boring.
Take twenty falls in a session. The first three will feel awful. By the tenth your body will have stopped bracing. That change is exactly what you came for, and it transfers directly to the moment you fall unintentionally, tired, on a route you cared about.
When not to fall
Practising falls does not mean falling is always acceptable. Do not practise below the third or fourth clip, where the rope stretch alone can put you on the ground. Do not practise on slabs, where you scrape rather than swing. Do not practise on routes with ledges, corners or protruding features in the fall line. Do not practise on traverses, where the swing is long and sideways.
And on traditional ground, treat every fall as potentially serious, because the protection is placed by a human under stress rather than drilled into rock by someone standing on a platform.
The part that is actually psychological
Most people who cannot fall are not lacking technique. They are experiencing a completely rational fear response that has not been given evidence to update on.
The evidence comes from repetition. Not from being told it is fine — from your nervous system observing, twenty times, that the rope held and nothing broke. That is why the graded ladder works and why one dramatic fall does not.
Climbers who can fall comfortably climb better, because they stop over-gripping, they commit to moves, and they stop downclimbing out of sequences they could have finished. The performance benefit is large and it is a side effect.
