Pack Fit Is A Torso Measurement Not A Volume
Rucksack comfort depends on back length and hip belt placement transferring load to the pelvis, which is why the litre figure on a pack says nothing about whether it fits.

People buy packs by capacity and then wonder why their shoulders ache. Capacity describes what fits inside; a different measurement determines whether the load is carried well.
The pelvis should carry the weight
A well-fitted pack transfers most of its load through the hip belt onto the iliac crest, the ridge of bone at the top of the pelvis.
Bone and the large muscles of the legs handle sustained load far better than the shoulders and neck, which fatigue quickly and lose function under compression.
Shoulder straps then serve mainly to hold the pack against the back rather than to bear weight. When they are bearing weight, something in the fit is wrong.
Back length is the fitting dimension
The relevant measurement is the distance from the seventh cervical vertebra at the base of the neck to the top of the pelvis, and it varies independently of height.
Two people the same height can need different frame lengths, because torso and leg proportions differ. This is why trying a friend's pack proves little.
Manufacturers offer packs in back-length sizes, or with adjustable harnesses. Getting that number measured properly is the single step that most improves carrying comfort.
The hip belt has to sit in one place
The belt is positioned so its padding wraps the iliac crest, not the waist above it and not the hips below. A belt on soft tissue slides and chafes.
Belt size is separate from back length, which is why some packs allow the belt to be swapped. A belt that cannot be tightened enough will not transfer load at all.
Load also shifts as a pack empties, and the belt needs retightening through the day rather than being set once at the trailhead.
Where the weight sits inside
Dense items packed close to the spine and roughly between the shoulder blades keep the centre of mass near the body's own line, which reduces the leverage pulling backwards.
Weight packed far from the back, or low in the bottom of the sack, forces a compensating forward lean that loads the lower back over hours.
For activities requiring balance on steep ground, a slightly lower centre of mass is often preferred, which is one of several reasons ski and climbing packs are built differently.
Why fit changes with the activity
A hip belt that carries beautifully on a trail becomes an obstruction under a climbing harness, which is why technical packs use thinner belts and accept more shoulder load.
Packs for skiing need to stay stable during rapid movement, so they sit closer and higher and compress the load tightly rather than maximising comfort at rest.
The practical approach is to load a pack with real weight in the shop and walk with it, since a pack that fits empty tells you almost nothing.
