Packrafting is not kayaking, and confusing them gets people hurt
A packraft opens up rivers no hardshell can reach. It also handles differently, fails differently, and rewards a genuinely different set of skills.

Packrafting has grown enormously, and for good reason. A boat you can carry in a rucksack over a pass and then paddle down the other side unlocks trips that are simply not available otherwise.
The problem is that packrafts look forgiving. They are inflatable, they bounce off rocks, they are stable at rest, and beginners get down easy water quickly. That accessibility hides some real differences from hardshell kayaking, and people who transfer assumptions from one to the other get caught out.
What packrafts do better
Forgiveness on impact. Bouncing off a rock rather than pinning against it is a genuine advantage, particularly on shallow, rocky, low-volume rivers.
Stability at rest. Wide, flat, high-floating. Comfortable for beginners and for carrying loads.
Portability, which is the entire point. A boat, paddle and gear inside a hiking pack changes what a trip can be.
Load carrying. A packraft with gear strapped to the bow handles better with weight than a loaded kayak does, and it is the standard tool for wilderness river travel where you must carry days of food.
What they do worse, and it matters
Speed and glide. A packraft is slow. In flatwater sections, on lakes, or crossing a current, you cover ground at a fraction of a kayak's pace. Trips take longer than the map suggests, headwinds are brutal, and a long flat section at the end of a day is genuinely hard work.
Punching through waves and holes. The high, light bow rides up rather than through. A hardshell knifes into a feature; a packraft gets stopped, spun, or surfed. Getting caught and held in a hole is a real packraft problem.
Edging and carving. There is essentially no edge to engage. Eddy turns and ferries are achieved with angle and momentum rather than edge control, which means the technique is different and less precise.
Wind. A light boat with a lot of freeboard is a sail. Crosswinds move you sideways in a way that is initially alarming and permanently annoying.
Rolling. Possible in a whitewater packraft with a proper thigh strap setup and a spray deck, and genuinely difficult without one. Many packrafters simply do not have a roll, which changes the risk calculation for every rapid.
The kit decisions that matter
Self-bailing or spray deck. An open boat that fills with water becomes sluggish and unmanageable in a rapid. A self-bailing floor drains continuously and is the simpler choice; a spray deck keeps you drier and warmer and enables rolling, at the cost of complexity.
Thigh straps. These transform boat control and they are the single biggest upgrade for whitewater use. They also introduce an entrapment consideration — you must be able to exit instantly, and you must have practised doing so.
Internal cargo storage in the tubes keeps weight low and off the deck, which improves handling substantially compared with everything strapped on top.
Repair kit. Non-negotiable in wilderness. A packraft can be punctured by a sharp rock or a branch, and a boat that will not hold air in a remote canyon is a serious situation. Carry patch material, appropriate adhesive, and know how to use them before the trip.
The wilderness context is the real difference
Most packrafting happens far from roads, often solo or in very small groups, frequently with no realistic rescue. That changes the calculus more than the boat does.
Grade III whitewater with a road alongside and four friends is a different proposition from the same water four days from anywhere with one partner. The correct move is to paddle well below your limit in remote terrain, and to portage generously — there is no shame in walking a rapid you would run at home.
Cold water in remote settings compounds everything. A swim that costs you a boat is a survival problem rather than an inconvenience.
Learn the water skills separately
The most valuable thing a new packrafter can do is take a whitewater course — in any boat — and a swiftwater rescue course. River reading, eddy turns, ferries, defensive swimming and rope work all transfer directly, and none of them are learned by floating down easy water in a comfortable boat.
The failure pattern in packrafting is people whose hiking and wilderness skills are excellent and whose river skills are thin, taking a boat somewhere their legs earned them the right to be but their paddling did not.
