Points, Reefs And Beach Breaks Produce Different Waves
The shape of the sea floor determines whether a wave peels predictably or closes out, which is why break type governs consistency, crowd behaviour and the hazards involved.

Surfers categorise waves by what they break over, and the categories are not descriptive labels. Each bottom type produces a distinct wave behaviour and a distinct set of hazards.
Why waves peel at all
A wave breaks where the water becomes shallow enough. If the shallow contour runs at an angle to the incoming wave, one part breaks first and the break travels along the crest.
That travelling break is what a surfer rides. A wave meeting a contour parallel to its crest breaks along its whole length at once, which is a close-out.
The bottom therefore determines rideability directly, and the alignment between swell direction and the contour is what makes a spot work on some swells and not others.
Point breaks are the most ordered
At a point, swell wraps around a headland and meets a shoreline running away at an angle, so the break peels progressively in one direction for a long distance.
The result is a predictable wave in a predictable place, which is why points produce the longest rides and the most consistent shape from set to set.
That predictability concentrates people. A single take-off zone with a long ride creates the most rigidly ordered line-ups in surfing, and the most competition for position.
Reefs are consistent and unforgiving
A reef is fixed, so the wave it produces changes only with swell, wind and tide. Its shape is reliable in a way sand never is.
Because the bottom is hard and often shallow, the consequences of a fall differ entirely. Coral and rock cause lacerations, and impact injuries occur in very little water.
Reef waves also tend to break more suddenly, since the depth changes abruptly rather than gradually, producing steeper faces and more critical take-offs.
Beach breaks shift constantly
Sand banks move with every swell, so a beach can offer excellent peaks one week and shapeless close-outs the next.
Multiple peaks spread people out, which makes beaches more forgiving socially, and the sandy bottom makes falls less consequential than on reef.
The tradeoff is the current system that accompanies sand banks, since the channels between them carry water seaward and are a hazard for anybody unfamiliar with reading them.
Choosing what suits the ability
The type of break matters more for a developing surfer than the size of the wave, because a shifting, sandy peak forgives errors that a shallow reef does not.
Every spot also carries hazards specific to it, including rocks on the exit, currents at particular tides and localised conditions that only regulars know about.
Surf schools, lifeguards and local surfers are the sources for that, and no description of break types substitutes for information about the specific place on the day.
