Poles Do More Than Save Your Knees
Trekking and ski poles change load distribution, balance and the way a person moves on steep ground, and their failure modes are worth understanding before relying on them.

Poles are treated as an accessory for descent comfort, and the knee argument is the one usually offered. Their more significant contributions are to balance, rhythm and load sharing across a long day.
They convert a two-point stance into four
Two additional contact points substantially improve stability on uneven ground, loose scree, stream crossings and traverses where a slip has consequences.
The benefit is largest exactly where the ground is worst, which is why poles appear on approaches and descents more than on flat trail.
They also let the upper body contribute to forward movement, which distributes fatigue rather than concentrating it in the legs.
Length is adjusted by terrain, not set once
The reference position has the forearm roughly horizontal on flat ground, but that setting is wrong on a steep climb and wrong again on a steep descent.
Shortening for ascent and lengthening for descent keeps the arms in a useful range, and people who never adjust get a fraction of the available benefit.
On traverses the uphill and downhill poles need different lengths, which is why adjustable poles remain more practical than fixed ones for mountain use.
Locking mechanisms are the failure point
Adjustable poles rely on either an external lever clamp or an internal expanding mechanism, and both can slip under load, usually at the least convenient moment.
External clamps can be tensioned in the field with a small screw; internal mechanisms are more sensitive to dirt, ice and moisture and are harder to service outdoors.
A pole that collapses while weighted on a steep step is a genuine hazard, which is a reason to check the tension before committing rather than after.
Straps are useful and also dangerous
Used correctly, a strap lets the hand relax and transfers load through the wrist, which reduces grip fatigue over hours.
The same strap holds the pole to the hand in a fall, and in skiing and in steep terrain that can transmit a twisting force to the wrist, thumb or shoulder.
Practice varies by discipline for this reason: many ski tourers drop the straps in avalanche terrain and on steep descents, while trekkers use them throughout.
Baskets, tips and surfaces matter more than they look
Carbide tips grip rock and ice; rubber tips protect slabs and reduce noise; large baskets keep a pole from sinking in snow and small ones stay out of vegetation.
Poles used on delicate ground can score rock and damage trailside soil, and some areas ask that rubber tips be used for that reason.
Carbon shafts are lighter and stiffer but fail suddenly when scratched or levered sideways, while aluminum bends first, which is a meaningful difference far from a road.
