Reading A Surf Forecast Beyond The Height Number
Swell height means little without period, direction, wind and tide, and forecast models describe deep-water conditions rather than what a particular beach will deliver.

Surf forecasts present several numbers, and most people read one. The others determine whether the swell that arrives is worth anything at a given beach.
Height is measured offshore
Forecast height generally refers to significant wave height in deep water, which is a statistical measure derived from the larger waves in a record rather than any individual wave.
What breaks at the beach can be considerably larger or smaller, depending on how the bottom focuses the energy and how the swell refracts on approach.
This is why the same forecast number produces very different surf at neighbouring spots, and why local reports measured at the beach are a different quantity entirely.
Period ranks the swell
Period indicates how far the energy has travelled and how deep it extends. A long period signals organised groundswell; a short one signals locally generated wind sea.
Two forecasts showing the same height but different periods describe fundamentally different days, one powerful and ordered, the other weak and messy.
Period also affects timing, because longer-period swell travels faster and arrives earlier, which matters when planning around a forecast arrival.
Direction decides which spots work
Swell direction determines which coastlines receive the energy and which are shadowed by headlands, islands or the angle of the shore itself.
A few degrees of change can switch a spot from working to flat, particularly where a point or an island sits offshore.
Matching direction to a specific break requires knowing the local geography, which is exactly the knowledge that a general forecast cannot contain.
Wind and tide finish the picture
Offshore wind holds a wave face up and grooms the surface; onshore wind breaks the face down and produces disorganised, crumbling surf regardless of the swell quality.
Tide changes water depth over the bank or reef, which changes where and how the wave breaks. Some spots work only on a narrow window of the tide.
Because these vary through the day, timing frequently matters more than choosing the day itself, particularly on coasts with a large tidal range.
Forecasts are models, not observations
The figures come from computer models of wind and wave physics run over a grid, and the grid is coarse relative to a coastline.
Buoy readings and coastal cameras give actual measurements, and comparing them to the forecast is how experienced surfers calibrate how a model performs at their coast.
None of it substitutes for looking at the water and for the assessment of lifeguards or local surf schools, particularly where currents and hazards depend on that day's conditions.
