Retiring Gear Is A Record-Keeping Problem

Deciding when a piece of soft equipment is finished depends on knowing what has happened to it, which means the paperwork is part of the safety system.

Textile equipment does not usually fail visibly. Deciding when to retire a harness, sling or rope depends on history the item does not display, which turns retirement into a records question.

Manufacturers publish lifespans with conditions attached

Equipment makers state a maximum service life and a shorter recommended working life, and both are conditional on storage, frequency of use and exposure.

The maximum figure is often quoted alone, which strips out the conditions that make it meaningful. Heavy use shortens the working life dramatically below the headline number.

The manufacturer's own documentation for the specific product is the authority, since the figures differ between materials, constructions and makers.

Chemical exposure is the invisible killer

Nylon and polyester are damaged by acids, some solvents and certain cleaning agents, and the damage can occur with no visible change to the material.

Car batteries, garage chemicals, marine environments and industrial settings are the usual sources, and the exposure is often unnoticed at the time.

Because it cannot be inspected for, suspected chemical contact is a retirement trigger on its own in every published guidance document.

Metal hardware fails differently

Aluminum carabiners and devices show wear as grooves, sharp edges and deformation, and those are genuinely inspectable in a way textiles are not.

A dropped carabiner is the long-running debate. The concern is microscopic damage from an impact, which cannot be ruled out visually, and practice varies between casual and professional users.

Professional and institutional settings resolve it with a written policy, which is a reasonable model for anyone maintaining a shared rack.

Inspection needs a system, not a glance

Formal inspection means running the full length of a rope through the hands, feeling for flat spots and core irregularities, and examining every stitch on a harness and sling.

Doing it on a schedule rather than opportunistically is what makes it work, because the alternative is inspecting only the gear you happen to be holding.

Institutions log inspections against individual items, which is why professional equipment carries a serial number and a card that follows it through its life.

Shared and borrowed gear breaks the record

A rack assembled from several people's equipment has no single history, and a piece lent out and returned has an unknown period in the middle.

Clubs and gyms handle this with numbered gear and a check-out log, which exists to preserve the history rather than to prevent theft.

The same principle explains the standing advice against buying used soft goods: the price is fine, and the history is what you cannot purchase.
