Rip currents: stop fighting them and start using them
A rip is the fastest way out the back and the most common reason people drown at beaches. Same water, same physics — the difference is entirely whether you understand what it is doing.

A rip current is not an undertow. It does not pull you under. It is water that came in with the waves finding a path back out to sea, and it moves horizontally, away from the beach, in a relatively narrow channel.
Understanding that one sentence is most of what separates a drowning from a slightly annoying paddle. The rip is not trying to drown you. It is trying to take you somewhere you did not want to go, and drowning happens when people exhaust themselves refusing to be taken there.
Spotting one from the sand
Look for the gap. Waves break where the water is shallow, so a channel of deeper water shows up as a lane where waves are noticeably smaller or not breaking at all. It often looks calmer, which is exactly why swimmers choose it.
Other markers: a streak of darker water running seaward, sand or foam moving steadily out rather than washing in and out, a churned or rippled surface texture that differs from the water either side, and debris or seaweed tracking offshore in a line.
Spend two or three minutes watching before you go in. Not glancing — watching. Rips are visible once you know the signature, and they frequently sit in the same places on the same beach for weeks at a time, near headlands, groynes, piers, and any structure that channels water.
What to do when you are in one
First: recognise it. The tell is that the beach is getting smaller and you are not moving toward it despite swimming.
Second: stop swimming toward the beach. You cannot out-swim a decent rip and the attempt burns the energy you need for everything else. This is the step that kills people — strong swimmers especially, because they believe, reasonably, that they can power through.
Third: float. Get on your back, breathe, let it carry you. Rips are usually not long. They pull you out through the breakers and dissipate. You will be tired and frightened and further from shore than you like, but you will be on the surface and conscious.
Fourth: swim parallel to the beach to get out of the channel, then come in at an angle on the breaking waves, which push you shoreward. If parallel is not working, keep floating and signal — one arm up, waving — and let the surf eventually deliver you. Most beaches with rips also have waves, and waves go where you want to go.
Which direction is parallel?
The honest answer is that you often cannot tell from inside the water, and that is fine. Pick a direction, give it thirty seconds of real effort, and if you are not making progress, try the other. What matters is that you stop pointing at the beach.
If you can see where waves are breaking on either side of you, swim toward the breaking side. Broken water is shallower water, which is outside the channel.
Surfers use these deliberately
Every surfer at a beach break is looking for the rip, because it is a conveyor belt to the lineup without duck-diving through forty waves. Paddling out through the impact zone is exhausting; paddling out in the channel is nearly free.
That is the same water that drowns swimmers. The difference is a board with flotation, an understanding of what the current is doing, and an intention to be taken out to sea. Nothing about the ocean changed.
If someone else is caught
Do not swim out to them without flotation. Bystander rescue attempts account for a grim and consistent share of beach fatalities — often the original swimmer survives and the rescuer does not.
Call for lifeguards. Throw or take something that floats: a board, a bodyboard, a cooler lid, anything. Shout instructions — "float, don't swim in, go sideways" — because a panicking swimmer who receives one clear instruction will often follow it.
The boring advice that works
Swim at a patrolled beach, between the flags, where people whose entire job is reading this water have already decided where the safe channel is. That single choice removes most of the risk and costs you nothing but a short walk along the sand.
