Rivermouths, Runoff And Water Quality After Rain

Rivermouths often produce excellent waves and the worst water quality on a coast. Both follow from the same fact: a river delivers whatever the land has been holding.

Why rain changes coastal water

Rainfall washes across roads, fields and urban surfaces, carrying whatever is on them into drains and watercourses that eventually discharge to the sea.

The first heavy rain after a dry spell flushes the greatest accumulation, which is why water quality typically deteriorates most sharply at the start of a wet period.

Combined drainage systems in older towns can overflow during intense rainfall, discharging untreated wastewater at designated points as a designed relief mechanism.

How long the effect lasts

Contaminants disperse and degrade over time, with sunlight, salinity and dilution all reducing concentrations, but the process takes time rather than happening at the tide change.

Guidance in many countries suggests avoiding the water for a period after heavy rain, particularly near rivermouths and storm drains, though the specific advice varies by jurisdiction.

Currents and tides determine where the plume goes, so a beach a short distance along the coast can be affected while its neighbour is not.

Sediment does its own damage

Runoff carries soil and debris, which reduces visibility and can bring branches, plastic and other solid objects into the surf zone.

Debris in the water is a physical hazard in its own right, particularly at a rivermouth after a flood, where large items can be moving with the current.

Rivermouths also generate strong outflowing currents after rain, which combine with the usual rip system to produce conditions that differ from the normal picture at that spot.

Why entry points matter

Contaminants enter the body through swallowed water, through the ears and eyes, and through breaks in the skin such as reef cuts or grazes.

This is why open wounds are treated as a specific reason to stay out, rather than as a minor inconvenience, in water that may be affected.

Rinsing with clean fresh water after a session, and attending to any cut properly, are the ordinary measures that most people already know and skip.

Where to get the actual information

Many countries operate bathing water monitoring programmes that sample designated beaches through the season and publish classifications and pollution alerts.

Some publish near real-time notifications of storm overflow discharges, which is more useful than a seasonal average for deciding about a given afternoon.

Anybody who becomes unwell after water contact should seek medical advice and mention the exposure, since that context matters to the person assessing them.
