Rope soloing: the systems, and why most people should not
Climbing alone with a self-belay is a legitimate technique with a real place in the sport. It is also unforgiving of exactly the errors that a partner would otherwise catch.

There are good reasons to rope solo. No partner available, a route you want to work at your own pace, a big wall where hauling and fixing suits one person, or simply a preference for being alone in the mountains.
There are also reasons it is more dangerous than climbing with someone, and they are not the ones people usually list.
The categories, distinguished
Free soloing is climbing with no rope and no protection. A fall is fatal. It is not a system, it has no redundancy, and nothing below applies to it.
Top rope soloing uses a fixed rope from an anchor above, with a self-belay device that travels up the rope as you climb. Lower consequence, simpler system, and by far the most common form.
Lead rope soloing means leading the pitch while belaying yourself, then rappelling to clean the gear, then re-ascending. Three times the work and considerably more complexity.
The specific hazards
Nobody checks your work. A partner catches the backwards device, the unfinished knot, the unlocked carabiner. Alone, every error is yours to catch, and the errors that kill people are precisely the ones the person making them did not notice.
Nobody helps if you get stuck. Hanging on a fixed rope after a fall, unable to reach the rock, with a device that has jammed, is a situation you must solve alone. If you cannot ascend the rope and cannot reach the wall, you are in serious trouble with no way to communicate it.
Rope damage over edges. A fixed rope running over a lip is being sawed every time you move. With no belayer to manage it, edge protection is entirely your responsibility, and the failure is catastrophic.
Devices used outside their design. Most self-belay setups involve using equipment in a way the manufacturer did not certify. That is common practice among experienced soloists and it means you are relying on your own understanding rather than on a tested system.
Incapacitation. A rock to the head, a bee sting, a medical event. Alone, on a rope, with nobody expecting you — that is the scenario that turns a survivable event into a fatal one.
Principles for top rope soloing
Two independent points at the anchor. Two separate pieces or bolts, no shared single component, no single carabiner carrying everything.
Two devices, or a device plus a backup. Redundancy on the rope itself. Many soloists run a primary self-belay device plus a backup — a second device or a friction hitch — so that a single failure or a single mis-feed is not the end.
Edge protection wherever the rope crosses rock. Rope protectors, a pad, a jacket, anything.
Backup knots on the rope beneath you at intervals. If the device fails, the knot stops the fall. This is cheap, simple redundancy and it is the single most valuable habit in the discipline.
Weight the rope end so the device feeds properly, and manage the rope so it does not tangle or catch below you.
Test the system on the ground, weighted, before every session. Not once — every time you rig.
Lead rope soloing, briefly
Materially more complex. A ground anchor that will take an upward pull, a device that feeds rope as you climb and locks on a fall, a carefully managed rope stack, and the discipline to place gear more conservatively than you would with a partner because the fall factors involved can be higher.
Then, after each pitch, you rappel the line and re-ascend to clean it — which means jumaring, which means yet another system with its own failure modes.
This is a technique to learn from someone who does it, on easy ground, over a long time, not from an article.
The non-technical protections
Tell someone. Where you are, which route, when you will be back, and when to call for help. This costs nothing and it is the difference between a rescue and a search.
Carry a satellite messenger, on your body, accessible with one hand, not in the pack at the base.
Climb well below your limit. Solo systems are not designed for repeated hard falls, and there is nobody to help if something goes wrong. The margin has to come from the difficulty.
Choose venues where you are visible, at least while learning. A popular crag with people around is a very different risk profile from an isolated one.
The honest recommendation
Top rope soloing on a well-rigged system, on a familiar crag, well within your ability, with backup knots and a redundant anchor, is a reasonable thing for an experienced climber to do.
Lead rope soloing is a specialist skill with narrow margins that rewards years of ordinary climbing experience first.
And in both cases: the systems fail rarely, the errors in setting them up fail regularly, and the whole discipline removes the single most effective error-checking mechanism in climbing, which is another person looking at what you just did.
