Ski Cutting Is A Professional Technique
Deliberately crossing a slope to test whether it will slide is a controlled operation with defined conditions, not a shortcut recreational travelers can borrow.

Ski cutting appears in avalanche literature as a mitigation technique, and it is regularly misapplied by recreational travelers as a way to test a slope. The context that makes it defensible is usually absent.
What the technique is for
A ski cut is a deliberate, fast traverse across the top of a small slope, intended to trigger a slide while the person is moving toward a safe location.
Ski patrols use it as part of a mitigation program alongside explosives, on terrain they know intimately and after a professional assessment of the day's problem.
It is a tool applied to specific, small, well-understood features, not a general-purpose stability test that can be applied to an unfamiliar slope.
The conditions that make it defensible are narrow
The technique assumes a slope small enough that a resulting slide is survivable, an escape point the skier can reach and an avalanche problem that responds to a small trigger.
Persistent weak layers, which propagate widely and can release far above the trigger point, invalidate the entire premise. So does connected terrain above.
Recognizing which avalanche problem is present that day is exactly the assessment a professional makes first, and it is not a judgment produced by looking at the slope.
A negative result proves very little
A slope that does not release when cut has told you about one line, on one aspect, at one elevation, at that moment. It has not certified the slope.
Slab avalanches are notoriously spatially variable, and a stable trigger point can sit meters from an unstable one on the same feature.
Reading a non-result as clearance is the reasoning error, and it appears repeatedly in the analysis of accidents involving experienced parties.
The recreational alternative is terrain choice
Recreational avalanche curricula teach terrain selection and the daily forecast as the primary tools, because they do not require testing anything.
Choosing lower-angle terrain, avoiding features with consequences below and staying off slopes matching the day's stated problem all reduce exposure without a test.
That approach is less satisfying than a technique, which is part of why the technique gets borrowed, and it is what the courses actually teach.
The professional context includes everything around it
A patroller ski cutting has a partner watching, a radio, a rescue team on shift, a closed slope below and a documented plan for the morning.
A recreational party has none of that, so the same physical action carries an entirely different consequence if it works as intended.
Anyone genuinely interested in the technique belongs in professional-track avalanche education, where it is taught with the surrounding structure that makes it a technique rather than a gamble.
