Slope angle: the number that decides whether the snow can slide

Most avalanche terrain sits in a narrow band of steepness. Knowing where you are inside that band, in real time, on real snow, is the most useful skill in the discipline.

Of everything in avalanche education, slope angle is the piece with the best ratio of usefulness to complexity. The snowpack is genuinely complicated. Weather is complicated. Angle is a number, it is measurable, and it draws a hard boundary around where the problem can exist at all.

The band that matters

Slab avalanches overwhelmingly release on slopes in the neighbourhood of the mid-thirties to low forties in degrees. Below about thirty degrees, gravity generally cannot overcome the strength of the snow in the ways that produce a slab release. Above roughly forty-five, snow tends to shed continuously in small amounts rather than accumulating into a cohesive slab — which is its own hazard, but a different one.

The practical consequence: if you never travel on or under anything steeper than about thirty degrees, you have removed most avalanche exposure from your day. That is a real option and more people should use it, especially early in a season or during a bad snowpack year.

Your eyes are unreliable

Human slope estimation is poor, and it is poor in a specific direction: we overestimate steep slopes when standing on flat ground looking up, and dramatically underestimate steepness when standing on the slope itself. A skier on a thirty-eight-degree face very often believes they are on thirty.

Fatigue makes it worse. Cold makes it worse. Wanting to ski the line makes it much worse.

Carry an inclinometer. Most compasses have one, several ski poles have one built in, and phone apps work adequately when your hands still function. Measure the actual start zone — the steepest thirty or forty metres — not the average of the whole run, because the slab releases where it is steepest, not where it averages.

Measure before you commit, not after

The measurement is worthless if you take it while standing in the middle of the slope. Read the angle from a safe vantage — a ridge, an island of trees, the flat below at a distance — before you have any exposure. Slope-angle shading on a good map layer does most of this at the planning stage, at home, in a warm room, where judgement is best.

Plan the day with the shading. Confirm on the ground with the inclinometer. Those are two different checks and they catch different mistakes.

What is above you

This is the part that gets skipped. A slope of twenty degrees is not safe if a forty-degree face is loaded directly above it. People are caught in flat terrain by avalanches that started hundreds of metres higher, and connected terrain means you can trigger a slope remotely from below or from the side.

When you look at angle, look at the whole path — start zone, track and runout — and ask what is connected to what. Trees do not reliably anchor a slope unless they are dense enough that you cannot ski through them. Widely spaced trees on a thirty-five-degree face are decoration, not protection.

Aspect and elevation ride along with it

Angle tells you whether a slide is mechanically possible. Aspect and elevation tell you whether this particular slope is likely to have the weak layer today. Wind-loaded lee slopes hold more snow, deposited faster, in slabs. Shaded aspects preserve weak layers for weeks or months longer than sunlit ones.

The forecast will normally name the aspects and elevations of concern. Your job on the ground is to notice when you are entering that combination — steep enough, right aspect, right elevation band — and to treat that intersection as a decision point rather than a piece of scenery.

Terrain is the only thing you control

You cannot change the snowpack. You cannot make a persistent weak layer heal because you have driven four hours. The one variable fully under your control is which slopes you stand on.

This is why angle discipline matters more than any test you can dig. A snow pit gives you a data point from one spot on one slope. An angle limit gives you a rule that holds everywhere and does not require you to be right about the snow.

The best skiers I know are boring about this. They pick a number for the day based on the forecast, they say it out loud to the group in the car park, and they hold it even when the light is perfect and the face looks stable and everyone wants it.
