What Rain Does To A Snowpack

Rain falling on snow changes stability quickly and in more than one direction, which makes it one of the few weather events that can spike danger within hours.

Rain on snow is treated seriously in avalanche forecasting because it changes the snowpack faster than almost any other input. Its effects run in several directions at once.

Water adds load and removes strength

Rain adds weight to the snowpack immediately, increasing the stress on any buried weak layer without adding any strength to resist it.

Percolating water also lubricates layer interfaces and weakens the bonds between grains, reducing the snowpack's ability to hold that new load.

The combination of rising stress and falling strength is why forecasters treat a rain event as a short-term danger spike rather than as gradual change.

The effect depends on where the water goes

In a cold, dry snowpack, water may percolate along preferential paths and refreeze, forming crusts and ice lenses rather than soaking uniformly.

In a warmer, wetter pack, water reaches deeper more quickly, and saturation at a layer boundary is associated with wet slab and glide activity.

Which of these occurs depends on the existing snowpack temperature and structure, which is why the same rainfall produces different outcomes in different ranges.

The rain line matters as much as the rain

A storm frequently rains at lower elevations while snowing above, and the transition elevation moves during the event.

That produces a snowpack with a rain-affected layer at one elevation band and dry snow above, and the boundary itself becomes a feature.

Forecasts specify the elevation of the rain-snow line for this reason, and it is one of the most consequential numbers in a winter storm forecast.

The crust that forms afterward persists

When rain-soaked snow refreezes, it forms a hard crust, and that crust becomes a smooth bed surface buried by the next storm.

Weak grains can form above and below such crusts, and the resulting structure can produce avalanche problems for weeks after the rain that caused it.

Which is why the rain event appears in forecast discussions long after the weather has passed, as a layer with a date attached.

Recovery is not a fixed interval

Snow that has been rained on and refrozen can be strong, and there is a well-known pattern of danger dropping once the pack has drained and refrozen thoroughly.

That recovery requires a genuine refreeze, which needs clear skies and cold air, and a warm cloudy night after rain does not deliver it.
