Why A Rope Bag Extends A Rope's Life
Dirt is the main thing that ages a climbing rope, and it does its damage from the inside where no visual inspection can find it.

A rope bag looks like a convenience item, and it is usually sold that way. Its actual function is keeping abrasive grit out of the core, which is what quietly ends ropes.
Grit works from the inside
A kernmantle rope is a load-bearing core inside a woven sheath. The sheath handles abrasion; the core carries the fall. They wear on different timelines.
Fine particles of sand and mineral dust pass through the sheath weave and lodge among the core strands. Every subsequent bend grinds those particles against the fibers.
The damage is invisible. A rope can look clean and handle normally while its core has been abraded by material the owner never saw enter it.
The tarp matters more than the bag
Most rope bags are a stuff sack attached to a square tarp. The tarp is the working part, and the sack is how you carry the tarp.
Flaking a rope onto the tarp keeps it off desert sand, granite dust and the gravel at the base of a sport crag, which is where the contamination happens.
Rope left in a coil on the ground between burns picks up as much grit as rope that was dragged, because it is sitting directly in the source.
Washing helps, but only some
Manufacturers generally support washing a rope in cool water with a product intended for technical textiles, then drying it out of direct sunlight and away from heat.
Washing removes surface dirt and some embedded particles, and it restores handling noticeably. It does not undo abrasion that already occurred, and it is not a substitute for retirement.
The instructions vary by manufacturer and by whether a rope has a dry treatment, so the specific care sheet that came with the rope is the one to follow.
Retirement is a history question
Ropes are retired on accumulated use, exposure to chemicals, severe falls, sheath damage and age, and manufacturers publish guidance covering all of those factors.
Because history matters and history is invisible, the practical consequence is that a rope with unknown provenance has no usable safety record regardless of how it looks.
That is the standing reason experienced climbers refuse second-hand ropes. The purchase price is not what is being evaluated.
Storage is the overlooked half
Ultraviolet light degrades nylon over time, and so does prolonged contact with solvents, battery acid and some cleaning chemicals. A car trunk in summer combines several of these.
A dry, dark, ventilated place at moderate temperature is the standard recommendation, which in practice means indoors rather than in a vehicle or a garage shelf near fuel.
Keeping a rope's own log, even a note of major falls and rough use, turns retirement from a guess into a decision with something behind it.
