Why Down Fails When Everything Is Wet
Down insulates by trapping air in a lofted structure, and moisture collapses that structure, which explains why synthetic fill is preferred in persistently damp conditions.

Down is the most efficient insulation available by weight, and it becomes close to useless when soaked. The reason lies in how the material traps warmth at all.
Loft is the insulation
Down clusters are three-dimensional structures of fine filaments that spring apart and hold still air between them. The trapped air, not the material, provides the insulation.
Fill power measures how much volume a given weight of down occupies when lofted. Higher fill power means the same warmth from less material, which is why it commands a premium.
Anything that stops the clusters lofting removes the insulation. Compression does it temporarily, and moisture does it thoroughly.
What water does to the structure
Wet down clusters clump together. Surface tension pulls the filaments into dense clumps, the trapped air is displaced, and the garment loses most of its thickness.
A flattened jacket insulates roughly like a damp cloth. Worse, evaporating water actively draws heat from the body it is supposed to be protecting.
Drying is slow, because the water is held inside a dense mass with poor airflow. In the field, a soaked down jacket often stays useless for the rest of a trip.
How synthetic fill behaves differently
Synthetic insulation uses fibres that hold their shape when wet. They absorb little water themselves, so a substantial share of the loft survives a soaking.
The tradeoff is weight and packed size. For the same warmth, a synthetic piece is bulkier and heavier, and it loses loft progressively with repeated compression over its life.
This is why the choice tends to follow the climate rather than the activity. Persistently damp maritime conditions favour synthetic; cold dry continental conditions favour down.
Treatments and their limits
Hydrophobic treatments coat down clusters to slow water uptake. They delay the collapse and speed the drying, which is a genuine improvement in intermittent damp.
They do not make down waterproof. Under sustained soaking the treated clusters clump much as untreated ones do, and the coating degrades with washing and time.
The shell fabric usually matters more. A tightly woven, water-resistant outer keeps light precipitation and spindrift away from the fill for long enough to matter.
Sweat is the usual culprit
Most down that fails in the field was not rained on. It was wetted from the inside by a person working hard while wearing it.
This is why experienced parties treat insulated jackets as stationary layers, put on at rests and taken off before moving, rather than as garments to climb in.
Managing moisture, keeping the sleeping insulation dry in a waterproof bag, and knowing what conditions the area actually delivers are the practical decisions that keep the system working.
