Reading A River Gauge Before You Read The River
American paddlers plan around stream gauges, but stage and discharge measure different things and a single number means nothing without the local context attached to it.

Nearly every planned whitewater trip in the United States begins with a gauge reading. The number is genuinely informative and routinely misread, because two different measurements share the same page.
Stage and discharge are not the same measurement
Stage is the height of the water surface at a fixed point, reported in feet. Discharge is the volume passing that point, reported in cubic feet per second.
A gauge measures stage directly and derives discharge from it using a rating curve developed for that specific site through repeated field measurement.
The two move together but are not interchangeable, and paddlers who quote one while their partner is thinking of the other end up on different rivers.
Gauge readings are local by definition
A reading describes the cross section where the instrument sits. It says nothing directly about a rapid five miles upstream above a major tributary.
Where a gauge is downstream of a confluence, the number blends two watersheds that may be responding to rain very differently.
This is why boating communities publish recommended ranges tied to a named gauge rather than to a river, and why substituting a nearby gauge invalidates the range.
Rating curves drift
A rating curve assumes the channel geometry at the gauge stays put. Floods move gravel, and a rearranged bed changes the relationship between height and volume.
Agencies re-measure and revise the curves, and provisional data published before that review can shift later. The provisional label on a reading is meaningful.
Practically, a familiar river running strangely at a familiar number is worth believing over the number, particularly after a large flood season.
The trend matters more than the value
A gauge on a steep rise behaves differently from the same level on a falling limb. Rising water carries fresh debris and is still gathering from the watershed.
Hydrographs showing the last several days are the useful view, because they show whether the river is loading up or draining out.
Snowmelt rivers add a daily cycle, peaking in the afternoon and evening from the day's warming, which can change a run substantially between morning and takeout.
Nothing on the internet replaces looking
Wood moves during high water and does not appear on any gauge. A single fallen tree can make a familiar rapid a serious hazard at an ordinary level.
Local paddling clubs and outfitters carry that information informally, and asking before a trip is standard practice rather than an imposition.
The gauge tells you whether the run is plausible. The scout at the put-in and at the rapid tells you whether it is a good idea today.
