Swiftwater rescue training is standard for guides and river professionals in the United States and increasingly common among private boaters. Its content is less about heroics than the name suggests.
The courses form a recognized progression
Training is delivered at defined levels, from awareness through technician grades, with the content and hours mapped to national standards used by fire and rescue agencies.
Recreational paddlers typically take a multi-day course covering swimming, rope work, boat-based rescue and scene management, taught in moving water rather than a pool.
Higher levels serve emergency responders who will run an incident rather than participate in one, with corresponding responsibilities and equipment.
The hazard order is taught explicitly
Rescue methods are ranked from lowest to highest risk to the rescuer, beginning with talking and reaching, moving through throwing and boat-based approaches, and ending with entering the water.
