Why Paddlers Cross Rivers At An Angle

Moving sideways across current without losing ground is done by pointing upstream and letting the water do the work, and the angle is the entire technique.

The ferry is the most useful maneuver in moving water and the one beginners resist most, because it requires pointing the boat away from where they want to go.

The current supplies the sideways force

A boat angled slightly upstream presents one side to the oncoming current, and that current pushes the hull laterally while the paddler holds position against the flow.

The paddler's effort goes into maintaining position and angle rather than into crossing, which is why a well-executed ferry is far less tiring than fighting across.

The same principle governs oars on a raft, paddle strokes in a kayak and a swimmer moving toward shore, which is why it is taught early in every discipline.

The angle is the adjustment

A shallow angle to the current means slow crossing but little downstream loss. A steeper angle crosses faster and gives up more river.

Reading how much room exists below determines which is appropriate, and that judgment is what separates a controlled crossing from an improvised one.

The angle is adjusted continuously through the crossing rather than set once, because the current speed changes across the channel.

Eddy lines are where it goes wrong

The boundary between an eddy and the main current involves water moving in opposing directions, and crossing it upsets a boat that is not leaning correctly.

Paddlers are taught to tilt the boat away from the direction the water is pushing, which feels backward and is the most common early error.

Getting this wrong is the standard reason beginners flip in what looks like calm water, and it is worth practicing on easy features first.

Rafts and kayaks apply it differently

An oar rig ferries by rowing upstream against the current with the boat angled, and the oarsman spends much of a rapid facing the wrong way by design.

Paddle rafts ferry by crew strokes and by the guide's stern control, which requires the crew to keep paddling when instinct says to stop.

Either way the intent is the same, and recognizing a ferry in progress helps a passenger understand why the guide is pointing where they are.

It is the setup for every other move

Most rapids are run as a sequence of position changes, and the ferry is how a boat gets from one part of the river to another without simply drifting.

Scouting a rapid frequently produces a plan expressed as ferries between features rather than as a single line.

Which is why instruction spends so long on flat, easy water: the maneuver has to be automatic before it can be used where it matters.
