Why Some Rivers Run On A Schedule

Dam-controlled rivers flow according to power generation, irrigation and licence agreements rather than rainfall, which makes them predictable and introduces hazards natural rivers do not have.

Some rivers rise on a published timetable and fall the same way. The reason is that a person upstream is opening and closing valves for reasons unrelated to paddling.

The water is being managed for something else

Dams exist to generate electricity, store drinking water, supply irrigation or control floods. Releases happen when those purposes require it.

Hydroelectric generation typically follows demand for power, which produces flows that rise and fall over hours and vary by day of the week.

Where whitewater releases occur, they generally exist because a licence or agreement obliges the operator to provide them, often on specific dates negotiated years earlier.

Predictability changes the sport

A dam-released river runs at a known level on known days, so paddlers can plan travel and know what the rapids will be like before arriving.

That reliability concentrates activity. Release rivers develop established access points, commercial operations and a level of local knowledge that rain-dependent rivers rarely accumulate.

It also produces very consistent grading, since the river is described at the level it actually runs at rather than at an estimated normal flow.

The rise is the hazard

Water arriving from a release can rise quickly, and it arrives whether or not anybody downstream is ready for it.

People on gravel bars, in the riverbed below a dam, or scouting from rocks have been caught by rises that removed their exit within minutes.

Warning systems, sirens and signage exist at many such sites for this reason, and they are the specific local information that matters more than any general knowledge of the river.

Cold water from the bottom of a reservoir

Many dams draw water from deep in the reservoir, where it remains cold year round regardless of the air temperature or the season.

A river below such a dam can be markedly colder than a free-flowing river nearby, which changes the immersion picture and the clothing required.

Paddlers arriving on a warm day and dressing for the air rather than the water are making a mistake that this kind of river punishes particularly.

Schedules change without notice

Releases are subject to drought restrictions, maintenance, equipment faults and changes in demand. A scheduled release can be cancelled or altered.

Operators typically publish flow information and schedules, and gauge readings show what is actually happening rather than what was planned.

Checking both on the day, along with local club information, is the routine that regular paddlers of controlled rivers follow, and it is not optional for a visitor.
